The Killeen City Council unanimously approved two items related to purchasing fitness equipment and furniture this week for the Rosa Hereford Community Center, for $96,051 and $259,019 respectively.

Antonio Murphy, executive director of Killeen Parks and Recreation, gave the presentation for the two items at Tuesday’s council meeting.

He gave some background on the center, explaining it was renamed the Rosa Hereford Center in 2020 after a former councilwoman.

“The Center Wing is currently under renovation,” he said, explaining it will reopen with new equipment, which will replace the old equipment that are 15 years or older.

The new design of the Rosa Hereford Community will include a Bob Gilmore Senior Wing, which will have a billiard room, computer room and ceramics and card room, according to the presentation attached to the agenda.

The East Wing will have an aerobics room, weight room, men and women’s locker room and meeting rooms.

Renovations to the Rosa Hereford Community Center began in 2021.

Mayor Debbie Nash-King said the equipment update was “much needed” and would positively impact seniors as well as youth.

Councilman Riakos Adams also pointed out that just because they’re buying the equipment doesn’t mean the center is going to open up soon.

“Not many people have driven by and seeing all the work that we still need, but at least it tells them that progress is being made,” he said.

Nash-King said the equipment is being stored and will move in once the work is completed.
